Pink Out for Cancer Awareness  Baines Middle School

Courtesy of FORT BEND ISD -
In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, students and staff at Baines Middle School took part in their school’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and Pink Out Day on October 24. The event invited students to support the cause by walking around the school track during all Physical Education and Health classes. Teachers and staff also joined in during their lunch and conference periods.

The school’s volleyball team also hosted its annual Lynn Armstrong Breast Cancer Awareness Staff Breakfast inform guests about the importance of breast cancer screening and prevention. Through “Change for the Cure” fundraising efforts of the school’s Wellness Club, Longhorns in Motion, and the school Pink Out Volleyball game, Baines students and staff helped raise more than $1,500 to support breast cancer research. Longhorns in Motion helps spread awareness of various health conditions, including diabetes, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis and other chronic and degenerative diseases.

“Longhorns in Motion would like to THANK our Baines community for your help and support in our Change for the Cure campaign.  We collected a grand total of $1662 for this worthy cause and we could not have done this without the help of our students, faculty, staff and parents!” - Helen Mallios Amsler-(Wellness Ambassador – Longhorns in Motion)

FBISD Proposed 2015-2016 School Calendar

index (2)

FBISD Proposed 2015-2016 School Calendar

The proposed calendar answers many requests of the community, balances instructional time with needed breaks, creates a common spring break and builds in bad weather make up days.
An October 1, 2014 collaborative meeting with local school districts resulted in a selection of a common spring break among the districts.

As you may know, state law prohibits the District from beginning instruction for students for a school year before the fourth Monday in August The District may not receive a waiver of this requirement.
As such, the District had limited options for the use of its students instruction and teacher contract days.
The 2015-16 draft calendar reflects many similar patterns marked by tradition in FBISD (i.e. Fort Bend County Fair day, week at Thanksgiving), but also allows for some additional professional learning opportunities for our teachers. Student instruction days are at 175, six early dismissals, and teacher contract days remain at 187.
